UFC 2010: Undisputed – What To Expect
Not long ago I wrote an article comparing UFC 2010: Undisputed and EA Sport’s MMA and I spoke about what was missing from UFC 2009 that could of made it a truly great game, and yesterday they announced everything that fans were asking for – it was as if they had read every single forum on how to improve the game.
THQ answered all of our prayers by bringing in every feature that let down UFC 2009. The first main feature being an ability to use the cage with strikes, transitions ands submissions available from the different positions on the cage; this will also completely change the scoring of rounds in UFC 2010 as they will now include the major factor of octagon control, which is all about who used the cage to there advantage the most.
Players will be able to utilise full head and upper body movement to dodge attacks and with the introduction of southpaw stance, lefty’s like Anderson Silva (who loves to use upper body movement to avoid being hit) will be completely different fighters. Bt for those who likes to take it to the ground, there is the new posture system that allows you to land stronger, fight ending punches from every position, however I believe that THQ have stuck with the same button-bashing, analogue spinning submissions. And these new feature will be functional with all of the 100+ fighters.
Customization has now gained even more freedom with the insertion of moves from more disciplines including Sambo, Karate and Greco-Roman Wrestling to allow your fighter to become a true mixed martial artist.
One strong criticism of UFC 2009 was its online capabilities; of course they’ve fixed it, silly! Plays can now create and join fight camps and leagues which allow you to train like real life UFC fighter and compete against other camps. But the online experience doesn’t stop there: using your created character you can earn experience points for your career through sparring online partners, which means that like in real life, it is vital to join the best camps additionally players can earn extra experience from how the interact during interviews and weigh-ins, building a unique personality and gaining cred for sponsorships. But online gained XP wont be the only improvement to the previously shallow career mode that left you fighting the same four fighters over and over again; there is the new ‘Game is Watching You’ feature that tracks every move you make, dictating what commentators say about you and how your opponent sets out to beat you.
UFC 2009 always seemed very limited, although I can still enjoy it as much as when I brought it on release day. There was really only 3 modes: career which became boring after a couple of title fights, exhibition, which is good if you have friends, but for loners it was just kind of pointless, so they would have virtual friends they’ve never met who they’d swear at when they lost (even though they didn’t have a mic). So this year THQ have turned the heat up with EA Sport’s MMA ready to begin the fight for mixed martial arts fans. They’ve added three new game modes, the first being Title Mode – where the player must climb through the ranks to challenge for the title in their weight class – sounds like career mode. The second is Title Defence Mode – this allows a player to play as a current champion and protect the belt against all comers, with constant milestones being set to help you progress. The third game mode is Tournament Mode which allows a player to set up a tournament for up to six people; sounds like the first thing I’m going to do is set up another pride knockout event!
With all these new features there’s a high chance that last years platinum success could look like a disgrace compared to this years explosion of fan feedback. Everyone stop for a moment and admire what I predict to be one of the surprise games of the year.
